Rigid and IMC
Conduit Bodies

Making the right choices ...

Selecting the right material for rigid and intermediate metal conduit (IMC) bodies is often a difficult task. Careful consideration of material properties and environmental elements is you’re best defense against future problems like corrosion. Malleable iron, steel, and aluminum die cast are just a few options when choosing the right material for electrical conduit bodies.

Steel: the most common metal used in industrial and commercial environments.

Malleable Iron: often used for electrical fittings that require great deal of rigid flexibility.  In addition to overall strength, malleable iron conduit bodies are suitable for environments that require small castings and high ductility and tensile strength. Although these rigid metals are not highly resistant to corrosion, malleable iron and steel are usually selected for rigid and IMC conduit bodies when strength and cost outweigh corrosion resistant properties.

Did you know ? ...
The Romans first used aluminum for medicinal purposes and as a dying agent.
------------------------------------------------------

Aluminum: industrial and commercial use is becoming more common. Often aluminum is mixed with other metals making an alloy commonly referred to as aluminum die cast. Aluminum die cast electrical fittings are desirable for electrical conduit bodies in commercial and industrial environments that possess high amounts of corrosion inducing elements—elevated amounts of chemicals and water, for example, food processing plants and excessive atmospheric elements like high humidity, salt, or sea mist with locations by the ocean. In addition to the corrosion resistant properties, aluminum die cast is usually selected for environments that require higher thermal and electrical conductivity.  Although the cost of aluminum die cast is more than steel and iron malleable for IMC and rigid conduit bodies, the installation cost of rigid aluminum is often less due to the lighter weight of the metal.
